36

A few weeks ago, our good friend David was heading back home after half a year of traipsing around Europe and stayed with us for a brief stop-over on his way home to Melbourne.

Dave's 36 hour stopover was of course a good excuse to discover the culinary delights of Sydney.

For brunch, Malc, Dave & I drove to Balmoral Beach to sample the delights of the Bathers' Pavilion (4 The Esplanade, Mosman NSW, ph 02 9969 5050). The chef of this restaurant, Serge Dansereau, is French Canadian, and during last year's Canada Day, the Consul General hosted a party at Bathers' Pavilion. Malc, of course, was invited to the party and raved for a few days about the food.

The brunch menu was mouthwatering. I had
Serge’s oven baked beans with smoked ham hock and sourdough. While it does sound like an classy version of baked beans on toast, Serge's beans were rich and full of flavour and the serving was quite hefty.

Dave had poached egg with asparagus and mushroom, chervil hollandaise. Dave spent half the time analysing how the hollandaise was made and raving about the portobello mushroom and even planned to go into mushroom raising.

Lastly, Aussie-Canuck Malc ordered eggs bénédict with short bacon and hollandaise sauce. And, for 10 minutes we did not hear anything from Malc. I guess he enjoyed his breakfast.

After a satisfying meal, we spent a few minutes taking photos of the beach and then headed back to the city.
